The World Steel Association (worldsteel) reports that global steel production had reached 1.85-billion tonnes in 2025, a 2% decrease from the 1.89-billion tonnes produced in 2024.

The Association notes that China ranked first in global production, having produced 960.8-million tonnes in 2025. The Asian country’s crude steel output was 4.4% lower year-on-year.

India ranked second with 164.9-million tonnes – a 10.4% year-on-year increase – while the US ranked third with 82-million tonnes – a 3.1% year-on-year increase.

Worldsteel’s data shows that South Africa’s crude steel production decreased by 4.7% year-on-year to 4.5-million tonnes.
